Prayer

“The utmost care should be taken to see that foodstuffs so produced and preserved by the householder do not spoil, for that would be waste and the Lord looks with disfavor upon waste. He has blessed his people with abundant crops…The Lord is doing His part; He expects us to do ours.” (First Presidency April 1942)

“Perhaps is we think not in terms of a year’s supply of what we ordinarily would use, and think more in terms of what it would take to keep us alive in case we didn’t have anything else to eat… “(Elder Harold B Lee welfare meeting Oct 1966)

“But the Lord has told us to prepare ourselves individually in our homes; to see to it that we have reserves of food and clothing; and it wouldn’t hurt to have some reserves of cash on hand. One has said: ‘Where preparations are being made there will be little difficulty, but where no preparation has been made, suffering and difficulties will come’. We don’t mean to alarm people. This has been the message of this Church since the institution of the Welfare Program, and we constantly bring it before you.” (Elder John H Vandenburg; Welfare Conference, April 1970)

“The revelation to store food may be as essential to our temporal salvation today as boarding the ark was to the people in the days of Noah.” (Elder Ezra Taft Benson Oct. Conf. 1973)

“We will see the day when we will live on what we produce” (Pres. Marion G Romney April Conf. 1975)

“We encourage families to have on hand this year’s supply; and we say it over and over and over and repeat over and over the scripture of the Lord where He says, ‘Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?’ How empty it is as they put their spirituality, so called, into action and call him by his important names, but fail to do the things which he says.” (Pres. Spencer W Kimball April Conf 1976)

“We do not know when the calamities and troubles of the last days will fall upon any one of us…The Lord simply tells us to watch and be ready. There is no security in any course except the course of obedience and conformity and righteousness.” (Elder Bruce R. McConkie, April Conf. 1979)

For over 40 years, in a spirit of love, members of the Church have been counseled to be thrifty and self-reliant; to avoid debt; pay tithes and a generous fast offering; be industrious; and have sufficient food, clothing, and fuel on hand to last at least one year. (Pres. Ezra Taft Benson, Oct Conf 1980)

“There is a portent of stormy weather ahead to which we had better give heed.”(Pres.Gordon B Hinckley Oct. Conf. 1998)

“As we have continuously counseled for more than 60 years, let us have some food set aside that would sustain us for a time in case of need.” (Pres. Gordon B Hinckley, Oct Conf. 2001)

“Church members can begin their home storage by storing the basic foods that would be required to keep them alive if they did not have anything else to eat…When members have stored enough of these essentials to meet the needs of their family for one year, they may decide to add other items that they are accustomed to using day to day.” (First Presidency – Presidents Hinckley, Monson and Faust –Jan 2002)

“When the time for performance arrives, the time for preparation is past.” (Pres. Thomas S Monson April 2006)

“Some Church members opine that emergency plans and supplies, food storage, and 72-hour kits must not be important anymore because the Brethren have not spoken recently and extensively about these and related topics in general conference. But repeated admonitions to prepare have been proclaimed by leaders of the Church for decades. The consistency of prophetic counsel over time creates a powerful concert of clarity and a warning volume far louder than solo performances can ever produce.” (Elder David A Bednar April 2020)
